Do lots of people in Iowa tend to cook & eat very unhealthy?!

Question: Do lots of people in Iowa tend to cook & eat very unhealthy!?
Or is it just my mother in law!? She soaks virtually everything in Crisco oil or bacon grease and heaven forbid a vegetable make it into her kitchen!. Everything is full fat, whole milk, cheese, processed ham, and TONS of oil!. Is this an Iowa/Midwest thing or is it her!? She's 72 so maybe it's an older gen thing too!? We live on the West Coast and every time we go back to visit her she seems to relish feeding my husband the most fatty, high cholesterol foods ever, and he suffers from high cholesterol and I don't want to lose him!. She puts French toast in an inch of oil plus the eggs, mixes in real butter with her eggs when making scrambled eggs, and even puts oil on her egg yolks when making sunnyside up eggs!. I've lived in WA, OR, AK, & CA and have never seen anyone eat such an unhealthy diet, it's amazing she's still alive!. Is this a regional thing or is it her!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

In the old days, people that had farms or ranches and worked the land worked from sun up to sun down!. They needed food that would provide them with comfort and energy for the heavy labor they engaged in!. Generations of folks grew up on recipes passed down by their families, which were loaded with fat, protein, sugar, and carbs!. Unfortunately, most of us don't do that kind of labor anymore, so we tend to hold on to the calories instead!. My family was from Illinois and Missouri!. I was raised in California!. Breakfasts were always substantial and often used bacon and sausage, fried eggs, biscuits, and white-pan gravey!. Dinners were made up of fried meats or casseroles, potatos, gravey, salad or canned veges, and there was always a luscious homemade cake or pie for dessert!. Now that I'm an adult, I realize that these foods represent "comfort" to me (and to most Americans)!. We have replaced these home grown recipes with fast food menus that incorporate the basic same elements of fat, sugar, protein and simple carbs!. Its no wonder we're all struggling with obesity!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was born and raised in Iowa and lived there until I was in my 30's!. Back when your mother in law was learning to cook, nutrition, high cholesterol, and the like wasn't much of an issue!. Fried foods, butter, and other fats were popular all over, not just the Midwest!. Old habits die hard for some people!. My mother in law is the same way, and she's a Southerner!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not regional:) !.!.!.!.!. MY mother-in-law lived in California, and (even though she had high cholesterol and high blood pressure) ate biscuits & gravy, ham, French toast and bacon for breakfast! She'd make my husband that too, but, after 25 yrs, he'll listen to ME now (instead of her) about what's healthy:) !.!.!. That took MANY years, but I've finally gotten him used to a much healthier diet:)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hey!!! did you hear that they want to start testing babies for high cholesterol!?!? those overweight babies are ripe for strokes too if they are being breastfed and not fed soy or skim milk!!!

It is NOT un healthy to cook in oils!. She is 72 is she not!?!? she has lived a very long life for when she started cooking that way!.

If you don't like the food, plan to stay in a hotel when visiting and invite them to go to meals at the hotel with you!!

Fats are not unhealthy!! frying and cooking with butter is not unhealthy!! Crisco, another story!!

Since I went back to eating butter on my toast and eating eggs period, I feel better and my cholesterol numbers have returned to normal!! I fry lots of things and yes, in Crisco too!!

Your hubby is probably suffering from high cholesterol from eating the west coast attitudes of foods!!!

My mother in law boiled everything until it was mush and poured bacon grease over everything that was not boiled to death!. It is a Kansas thing!. My MIL lived to be 96 eating that way!!!

Look how many more people are dying of heart attacks and strokes than were when MIL was a girl!! Twice as many eating on the "healthy" food plans!. We are NOT better off eating according to the "anti fat", "anti good tasting" foods gurus!!Www@FoodAQ@Com
