Waxed paper is used when the food needs to be preserved, but still needs to "breathe" a bit!. You would wrap sandwiches for lunch in waxed paper for example!. Or cover a powdered-sugar-topped food with waxed paper before storage to keep moisture off!.
It can also be used in a non-baking situation during food preparation (where you need to have to put uncooked foods such as dough on something prior to cooking, to keep the dough from sticking to a surface!.!.!.the counter for example)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Waxed paper is for separating the layers of cake after baking or turning the layers out of the pans to finish cooling so they don't stick!.
I have been known to make decorating cones out of waxed paper or parchment paper either one!.
Waxed paper is also good for separating crepes and other delicate things so you can bake ahead and stash in fridge or freezer in less space with out fear of sticking them together!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's not a baking use but I remember as a kid looking for pretty fall leaves and saving them by ironing them between 2 pieces of waxed paper, the wax transferred to the leaves and they lasted for quite a while!.
Long before parchment paper was around waxed paper was used for baking the way parchment paper is now!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I use it to cover food that I'm heating up in the microwave !.!.!. and line tupperware containers with it to store cookies!. I put it over the doily under a cake, so that the doily doesn't stick to the bottom!.!.!.!.I lightly cover things when I put them out for a buffet, so flies don't get on them !.!.!.!.But that's about all:) !.!.!. I'd never use it to wrap anything in that I want to stay fresh, because it doesn't seal at all:) I use zip-lock baggies alot; or foil; or saran wrap!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
