I melted a pot on my stove.?!

Question: I melted a pot on my stove!.!?
Not being anything that remotely resembles a chef, I managed to burn the coating of a pot onto the heating element (electric coil type)!.

The pot is ruined, no chance of saving it!. But is there anything I co do to remove the burnt on coating from the heating element!? If it helps any, it resembles an extremely hard plastic, I don't know what the stuff is!. I tried a scotch bright, all it did was destroy the pad in about 5 passes!. I tried an old cheap knife and I wasn't able to scrape anything off!.

I want to avoid replacing the coil ($40)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I agree, replace it!. You probably were using a porcelain enamel pot!. Once that is melted onto the element, there is nooooo getting it off!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I agree with the answer to turn on that element and let the remaining material melt and wipe or brush it off, or if it appears to be burning or otherwise decomposing into inorganic ash, just open the windows, turn on the exhaust fan and let it burn!

Once it's done and cooled, you should be able to brush off the remaining ash!.

BTW, this is a fairly common occurrance - a local appliance parts company has a "Wall of Shame" behind the counter - it's filled with numerous electric range elements with various things melted into them!. Plasticware is the most common, but there are also some aluminum pans!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Did you try to heat the coil up and try to scrape it off carefully that way using a flat Spackle knife holding it with a pot holder or oven mit!?
A propane torch may take the rest of it off but becareful that your not damaging the plugs that connect the coil to the oven!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I had the same thing happen, the coil needs to be replaced, because the residue is toxic, if it's teflon, it will actually put sulphuric acid in the air!.!.!.
Repalce the coil and be done with it!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Try to take it out and rub it hard with soapy water!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

wonder if it heats is easier to remove the pot parts as will melt !? you can put some aluminiun foil below to grab some melting parts!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would suggest the warming a scraping method with the tinfoil underneath!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am in agreement to replace it for safety's sake!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
