From the other answers i would assume that it depends on your type of oven, what do the instructions say!?

If you no longer have them try looking on the manufacturers web site!.

for all the people giving other thumbs down, my mothers oven you do shut the door when grilling according to the instructions and on mine you leave it open, please don't judge the world based on your little piece of it!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hello again Poppy! Now you know there is not such thing as a dumb question -- only silly answers!! LOL!

Does your oven not have a separate grill!? The sort you make toast under!.!.!.!? It is far better using a purpose made grill than an oven if you have the choice!.

If you do have to "grill" in the oven, it needs to have elements in the top (oven ceiling! LOL!), otherwise it is technically a "roast" when cooking at the highest setting!. That is a waste of energy but it is also an idication of whether it should be with door open or shut! It is also way people are giving conflicting advice!.!.!. They all have different ovens and the manufacturers have a different "take" on the best technique too!

You see if you are heating the whole space to "roast" which achieves the same effect as grilling, then you want to keep the heat in!. You will then need to keep the door well closed!.

But if you have a heat source which radiates from the top, you can grill with either door open or closed!.!.!. The grilling just is better the nearer it is to the heat source!.

Now I have a gas oven with separate grill!. I always grill with the door (flap) open so there is plenty of oxygen to "feed the flames" and make it more efficient!. I would never dream of cooking at high temperatures in the oven with an open door!.!.!. Apart from anything else, it is dangerous!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When I had an electric fan-assisted oven here in the UK and a regular electric oven in the States, you could close the door safely on both!. I have a gas grill now, and the instructions say to leave the door open (the door hinge is designed to stay open by itself a couple of inches)!. I think that's a health and safey issue with gas, though!.

But see what the manufacturer's instructions say!. However, I've always been able to keep the door closed with an electric oven!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no i always close mine, i grill everything and its never been a problem, our oven door opens from the top downwards and the nobs get to hot to touch if i leave it open!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My oven door has a notch where it automatically stays open when I'm broiling!. I just measured & it is 5 inches!. Not a dumb question!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I found out the hard way!. I left the oven door closed while grilling the top of pizza and the grill element melted onto the top of the pizza! always good to know these thingsWww@FoodAQ@Com

I leave mine open - not fully open as I'd trip over is!. Just open it a few inches!. Let's the smoke out!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You are supposed to leave the door fully open when grilling!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well if you are grilling toast or something, unless you leave the door open you wont see when its done!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most grills will not work unless the door is left slightly open!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You leave the door fully open when grilling!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I just leave the door open when I'm grilling!.and it's not a dumb question!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes leave the door a jar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It really dosen't matter, but it's easier to see the progress of the cooking!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No you close it fullyWww@FoodAQ@Com
