Fondant can be tricky, so I would encourage you to take a class or at least watch a lot of online videos for tips and tricks for working with fondant!.
Yes, you do still want to frost the cake (use as much frosting as you normally would, if you were not covering it with fondant) because fondant is dry like a dough and the cake would not be very tasty with just the fondant on it!. The frosting you use underneath the fondant will somewhat soak into the fondant, softening it and giving it more flavor!. If you are using packaged fondant, this is a definite plus, as many of them don't taste very good!. The frosting also helps the fondant to stick to the cake!.
You do not need to freeze the cake, but it does help if you use a more firm texture cake (like pound cake, or another homemade cake) when planning to cover it with fondant!. Some of the box mixes turn out so soft and moist that when you are handling them to cover them in fondant, they can fall apart!.
If you are making homemade fondant, there is a link in sources for making a fondant from marshmallows!. It is an economical and tasty alternative to the pre-made purchased stuff!.
