Ok I am sorry, but what ever recipes you are looking at are WRONG!. Buttercream frosting is made with BUTTER hence the name!.
Here is my recipe
2 sticks butter softened
3 cups powdered sugar
1 Tsp good vanilla
(I add straberries and straberry jam to make it flavored)
Beat the butter in a blender until fluffy add vanilla or flavoring of choice
Slowly add sugar until it is well incorparated!. Once all the sugar is added beat until light and fluffy!.
There, you have BUTTERCREAMWww@FoodAQ@Com

Find recipes that use butter!. Vegetable shortening, which is basically just hydrogenated vegetable oil, is in most cases in baking nothing more than a bad substitute for butter (though it's good for deep frying)!. Certainly in this case, it will make a terrible buttercream that coats the tongue in an unpleasant way!. The only positive is that if you use a little shortening in an otherwise butter-based recipe, it should set more firmly and be less likely to melt and run in a warm room!.
Crisco is just a brand of vegetable shortening!.
By the way, the answers saying that buttercream is nothing more than butter and powdered sugar beaten together with some liquid are mistaken!. It involves a sugar syrup, beaten egg whites, and some cooking!. When making frosting, I usually do make the simple butter/sugar/milk/vanilla recipe these people are describing, and I like it -- but it is definitely not buttercream!. I'll find a recipe!.
Edit:
OK here are a couple of recipes for real buttercream:

Buttercream icing is just butter and icing sugar mixed together!. You can make the consistency to whatever you like by adding water or milk to the mixture once you have finished mixing the butter and icing sugar together!.
If you want an exact recipe for it, have a look on the back of a packet of Silver Spoon icing sugar!. They usually print one there!. I normally make mine without measuring the ingredients out and go by taste :)!. There's no science behind it, I promise!Www@FoodAQ@Com

shortening is a solid form of oil (like margarine)
You could easily use butter instead of shortening (which was the original ingredient in buttercream icing)!.
Margarine could also be used, however, depending on the margarine, it may make your icing yellowish in colour!. also soft margarine will make a softer icing that is less likely to hold any piping designs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Do NOT use lard!.!.!.!.lard is animal fat!.
You should be able to find a brand that is decribed as "Pure Vegetable Shortening"!.
It's white and has the consistency of a stiff margarine!. No taste of it's own, really, which is why it's a good base for decorating frostings!.
What do you use to make pie crust!?
How about "Trex"!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
