Question: New cheap bbq!?
I just got a new cheap bbq from wal mart!. that's all good!. but I'm new to charcoal bbqing!. open vent hotter!? closed vent cooler!?
I'm not sure how to use the vents!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
yep, opening the vents will make the fire hotter!. the more air the hotter the fire!. if you are cooking burgers and they flame up, just put the lid down!. get a chimney starter too, to keep the chemical taste of lighter fluid off your food!. let the coals get completely grey before you cook to prevent burning food!.as you gain experience (and ruin food) you will gain confidence!. have funWww@FoodAQ@Com

Open vent lets in more oxygen to the coals to make it hotter!. I've stuffed out a good charcoal fire by having the vents closed!.!.!. so keep an eye on how your food is cooking!.

Some more tips on charcoal:
* If you don't have a chimney to light the charcoal, get the good kind (don't scrimp in the charcoal!.!. Kingsford is really the best)!. Pile it all up as compact as you can!. Douse it with the lighter fluid and let it soak in for a couple minutes!.!.!.!. THEN light it!. If you light it right away, it will burn off quick and you'll have to use more!.

* If you're cooking anything with fat in it, keep a squirt bottle with water handy!. You can squirt the coals and flare ups with the water and it shouldn't put out your fire!.

good luck! You'll be a grill master in no time! :o)Www@FoodAQ@Com

What type of grill!? I know most of them!.

Open all dampers!. When coals are ready, close bottom dampers half way and control heat with the top damper or dampers only!. Close to lower open to for higher!.
Royal Oak is far better than Kingsford!. Kingsford is full of oil bi products!. Lump Wood charcoal is the best!.
