The acid in the buttermilk reacts with the baking soda help make the cake rise, but so will the cocoa powder, so you should be ok not using the buttermilk!. Otherwise, you would need to substitute baking powder for the baking soda!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I always use regular milk (2% or vitamin D or reconstituted dry milk) when a recipe calls for buttermilk!.

Substitutes:
Combine one cup of milk (or soymilk) plus one tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar, and allow to stand for ten minutes
OR Combine one cup of milk plus two teaspoons cream of tartar, and allow to stand for ten minutes
OR Combine two parts plain yogurt plus one part milk
OR plain, low-fat yogurt
OR sour cream
OR molasses (in batters that also call for baking soda) Cooking hints: Churn buttermilk may require longer baking times than ordinary commercial buttermilk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can make buttermilk or an almost as good substitute a couple of ways!. You could add some lemon juice into some milk until it goes slightly lumpy/ curdles!. Or you can mixed equal quantities of natural yoghurt and milk together! The results are pretty good!
For information on where to buy some buttermilk, Morrison do them in their cream shelf!. It is called Lakeland buttermilk and it cost around 29p!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can make your own buttermilk by adding a few drops of lemon juice to regular fresh milk, or you can replace the buttermilk with unflavoured yogurt instead!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
You can find it in the milk/yoghurt aisle at any Tesco, Sainsburys, etc!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
