Answers:
Of course you can go ahead and use iceberg!. Lettuce tends to fare well or better if you cut it with a knife because tearing bruises the leaves and over time they don't look as fresh and yummy!. But you can definitely do it!. Just tear your pieces of romaine into bite sized pieces!.
I would certainly do this because iceberg really while it is a salad 'green' technically, it doesn't have as much nutritional value as the darker greens!.
So!.!.!.when you're old enough to use the knife, it's the best idea for preparing lettuce for salads!. Until then, tearing is just fine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

99% of the salads eaten in the USA are all or part iceberg even though it is sneered at as tasteless by people who want other darker leaves!. "American Salad" sold in grocery stores is mostly iceberg with cabbage, carrots, and radishes!. Make sure it is shaken free of water or it will not hold dressing and taste pitifull!.
Instead of using a big serrated knife, if you are allow shorter or smaller knives, look at long thin or chef's style knives which handle lettuce just fine, especially if, on loose leafed ones you bunch it up with your fingers and cut close to your hand!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Of course! That's the only lettuce that was usually used in the 50's and 60's! In fact, there's a "wedge" salad still popular, that just a wedge of iceberg lettuce, with Thousand Island dressing on it (not MY idea of a salad, though)!.!.!.!.!. I like iceberg lettuce shredded, but you can just tear it into pieces with your hands and add whatever else you like to it!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes you can, but you can always break up the romain lettuce with your hands!. Romain is tastier than Ice Berg Lettuce!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!. That's the only lettuce we had in America until they invented Romaine in the 1980's!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, it's dangerous!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes-it's just as good!Www@FoodAQ@Com
