I've used crushed instead of diced!. You just won't have the chunks of tomato in the chili!. If you want the chunks, then do like you said and chop up a few fresh tomatoes!. Good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Theoretically yes, as long as the recipe calls for the tomatoes to be processed into a puree or paste or some similar form down the road!. You can also substitute if the tomatoes are being cooked for a decent period of time, as they will break down and dissolve!. Since you are making chili in this case, you should be fine, as the original state of the tomatoes won’t make too much of a difference after they are cooked!.

If a recipe is looking for the texture of diced tomatoes, then you would be out of luck!. Attempting to use crushed instead of diced tomatoes for something like a chunky salsa or a rustic pasta sauce would result in the loss of texture that diced tomatoes would provide!.

Try to strain the tomatoes to remove as much of the strained liquid as possible!. And go ahead and use a fresh tomato or two if possible!.

Alternately, if your skills are good enough and you have enough time, you could forgo the can of crushed tomatoes entirely and simply add fresh tomatoes that you diced yourself!. The results from this would probably closer to what the recipe originally intended!.

P!.S!. If you have to use the can of crushed tomatoes, make certain that you check to see if they contain any salt, as some tomato products can contain added salt!. If it does, be certain to adjust the amount of salt you add to the entire recipe!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Crushed tomatoes is the same as stewed except they have been smashed!. There will be big chunks that will need to be cut to size, but other than that, they are basically the same!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes it's fine! I used crushed a lot because of the 4 kids complaining "I don't like pieces of tomato, Mom!" - it's great! It won't be too runny - if it is, add some tomato paste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

sure you can use them

VEGGIE CHILI!?!?!? YUCK

if you have fresh tomatoes try dicing them up and adding them instead of the crushed!. it will be fine with crushed but if your worried just use fresh!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That will be fine!. I do it all the time!. Wait and add any extra liquid (water) until it's all assembled so that you don't get it too runny!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
