Traditionally spices are best kept around for an average of 6-8 months!. Many are actually capable of lasting a full year before they should be replaced!. However there are a few spices that should be prepared shortly before using, as they won’t last for very long!. Nutmeg falls into this category!. Nutmeg is best ground and used as needed, as its aroma and flavor are very short lived!. On the other hand, there are a few very strong chili powders from hotter chilies that can last a full year, although using them up quickly is still a better choice than allowing them to sit!.
Remember to keep the spices in airtight containers in a cool, dark place to avoid damage that might result from heat exposure, or even worse, light exposure!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i wouldn't put a time on it!. I'd say whenever you notice the spices lose flavor!. Some people have spices in their spice rack that's been there for many many years and that's fine!.
You will not get sick from old spices unless they've gotten moist somehow!. But if you keep them dry, throw them out whenever you want!. I'd say keep them all until you feel the need to throw them out!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Whole, you'll get about 6 months in the pantry, about 1-1/2 years in the freezer!.
Ground, you'll get about 3 months of good use in the pantry, closer to 8 in the freezer!.
Always keep them away from air, light, moisture, and heat to get the most out of them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Try the "one year marking";
after that, if the lid had been tightly closed; some peps/powers still there!.
But if you can: toss out the old ones and buy the new ones!.
(at time, I still used the one ones; since necessity dictates so)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If the spices are whole and from a good source, a spice store one the rotates their stock, one year!. if the spice is ground, like the ones from a local food store, three to six months!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Most chefs say 6 months to a year; I say it depends on the packaging!. I keep most all my dried herbs and spices in glass jars, air tight, so mine are still good for years!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I'm sure some spices loose their "pep" after a period of time BUT seriously!.!.!.!.I keep mine until I run out!. My food tastes just fine!. :-)Www@FoodAQ@Com
