Ocean/Dolphin Theme Cake... Weird Question...?!

Question: Ocean/Dolphin Theme Cake!.!.!. Weird Question!.!.!.!?
I bought real seashells from a dollar store today, to use for my ocean/dolphin theme birthday cake for my friend!.
I don't plan on putting the seashells (they're real) ON the cake, but on the plate near the cake (more than a few inches away)!.!.!. surrounded by plastic dolphins and fish!.
Is this safe!?
I know it's a weird question but is it safe to put them near something that is going to be eaten!?
I tried to find fake/plastic seashells but I couldn't find any!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Using the shells is no problem, but I would take a little precaution before use!. I would wash them in hot, soapy dishwater and rinse them in especially hot water that I put a little bleach into!. Let them air dry, and check to make sure there are no additives like that fake coloring they put on coral!. The shells should be safe, and you really do not want fake ones!. They would look really nice on sugar that you color to look like sand!. Check the color chart on the box of food colors!. You just put the sugar in a jar and add a few drops!. Shake like crazy and let dry!. If you want blue water look, you could color more sugar or coconut for wavy water!. There are white sandy beaches, so maybe you don't want to color it!.

Hope this gives you an idea - your theme is really creative and your friend will love it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

In the Food-service industry, we are not legally allowed to use or, re-use empty shells of any type!. Even if we ran them through a dishwasher!. There is just too much risk/liability involved!. What I would do if I were you is this!.
First, and most important, scrub both outside and inside with hot, soapy water!.
Second, sanitize them and let them dry!.
Now comes the fun part!.
Using one shell, wrap the outside in foil so as to get the shells external texture!.
Using another shell, wrap the inside in foil!.
lightly flour both of them!.
Depending on how many shells you want, you are now ready to make them out of cake batter!.
Place some face-up and others, face down and spread batter both over and in them!. Be careful when you bake them because the shells hold heat really well!.
I have done this same thing for an aquarium opening!. They ended up with these little cake shells so that the whole thing was edible!. I went over fantastically!.
Enjoy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would boil them in water for 15 minutes to be safe!.

How about making a savory cake from Mahi Mahi, also known as Dolphin fish!.!.!.Now that would be creative!Www@FoodAQ@Com
