Is it wise to cook everything from scratch so you know exactly what is in your food?!

Question: Is it wise to cook everything from scratch so you know exactly what is in your food!?
I was watching the latest dispatches and was literally horrified by the standard of hygiene in the factory they filmed undercover!.

As much as I empathise with the foreign workers - surely simple health and safety comes first!?
Yes, I understand they "weren't given training" but isn't it common sense to not use bread that has dropped on the floor!?
A member of staff was caught wiping his/her nose with his/her hand - then touching food straight after!.

I don't think it will just be sandwich making factories that will have such poor standard hygiene!.

So my question is:
Is it better to cook everything from scratch, despite it taking longer!?
Is it best to limit the amount of times you eat out and only go to restaurants that are seen as having decent (at least) food + preperation hygiene!?

What are your thoughts on this!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you work it out!.!. it really doesn't take longer!. I can make dinner, cooking time and all in about 45 minutes!. It would take me that long to go out and wait for some crappy food!.!.!. Anyway, I have noticed a big turn around in my health since I took over cooking for my wife and I!. I don't think that the hygiene part is the problem!.!. it is that they use so many chemicals, fillers, and hydrogenated oils in their cooking!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I really want to grow all my food and raise all my own meat and do it all myself - that way I know exactly what my family and I are eating!. But you know, thats a full time job in itself!

I did watch that dispatches, and the guy was just making excuses for them saying they need educating - it is common sense - they need pride and a decent wage and decent working conditions, not just to be sat in front of a ten minute video!Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are some advantages to cooking all of your own food: it saves money, it tastes the way you like it and you can control the nutrition and calorie content!. The down side is that cooking your own food is time consuming and it can be tedious!. I usually make most of my own meals and I find I am a happier guy when I do!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Making from scratch is the best way!. You know what is going into your food!. You know what happens in the process!. You know what your family is eating!. It isn't such a time consuming process either!. it tastes good and is good for everyone!. There are very few conveneince foods in my house!. I bake bread often but maybe not so much in the hot summer months!.

I just think it would do everyone a world of good health if they planted gardens and got aways from the convenience foods rut!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

itis definatly better to cook ur own food its fresh, not totally processed and hygienic!
as for eating out try cutting down i know its difficult but before leaving home try making sumthing to eat!.!.!. if u do want to go out to eat limit it to half of the tyms u go out at the moment!.!.!. think about everything u saw on those programmes im sure ul agree its best to eat at home cumon do u wanna be eating sum1s snotsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Yes! If you cook your food from scratch, it will be more nutritious, fresher, more sanitary and taste better!. It doesn't really take much more time to prepare food from scratch than out of a box!. You will also save money!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I cook everything from scratch!. I know what's in it (no additives), it's healthy and cheaper!. And because I cook enough for 2 days, it saves time!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I know it's better when you cook your own, good fresh food, and it really doesn't take all that much time!. There are very few eateries that make food as well as I can cook it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I do, sometimes I even go as far as making my own pasta from scratch!. So my answer is yes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

In a word, yes!. With some things, it doesn't take much longer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

if you have a lot of timeWww@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, you should always try to make your own meals from scratch!. I am a PhD student, so pretty busy - but I still find the time to make a meal from scratch every night!.

It really doesn't take much longer than a ready meal - I normally spend about 30 minutes making my dinner, and then it also provides left overs for the next days lunch or dinner!. It's so much better for you to know exactly what it is you are eating - you don't have all the added salt and other god knows what that they put in ready meals and pre-prepared foods!. It also tastes so much better and can be fun!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I cook for my wife and myself and make pretty much everything from scratch, except bread, of which we eat very little!. I'm very careful to buy wild fish, organic meat from animals which have been humanely treated (well, so they say and one can only do one's best), organic eggs from hens which have been fed a vegetarian diet and which carry the "certified humane" stamp, and mostly organic vegetables, butter and milk!. Because I cook rather simple meals it's not time consuming and besides I enjoy doing it!. Having started doing this, about ten years ago, we've lost our taste for most restaurant food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
