When making rolled fondants, can I use butter as a substitute for shortening?!

Question: When making rolled fondants, can I use butter as a substitute for shortening!?
I don't know what shortening actually looks like and I certainly don't know where to buy it!. If I really need to use shortening in fondant icing, I would like to know why I can or why I can't use butter as a substitute!?

Thanks! =)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
No you cannot substitute butter for shortening when making fondant!. At room temperature butter gets all melty and soft, shortening on the other hand is made to be solid at room temperature and helps to hold up the texture of the fondant(smooth)!. Shortening will most likely be in the baking section of your grocery store or the oils sections, its in a round can with a plastic lid, the most common brand of shortening is Crisco but you can use store brand as well!.

Hope this helps!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi,
You can buy shortening in the baking aisle of your supermarket!. It's white and usually comes in a can!. You really do need it for fondant, because butter will make the fondant too thin and tearable to be able to work with it!. also, I think if you tried to roll it out it just wouldn't hold any shape

Hope this helps =)Www@FoodAQ@Com

No,it melts and breaks to easily!. Even though butter is healthier, it won't work!.!.
Crisco=Shortening, can buy it really at any grocery store in the baking isle,and/or usually the same isle as flour and sugar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Crisco is the same thing as shortening!. I wouldn't sub butter for shortening because the two will produce different consitencies in the fondant and butter will make the icing go bad sooner!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't be tempted to substitute butter for the solid white shortening in a Fondant Recipe!. The shortening actually blends better (without streaking) than the butter!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

NO! VERY IMPORTANT! Use SHORTENING! I have had this experience before! SHORTENING! SHORTENING!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, this is one case where it will simply not work with butter!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
