Trifle can be made very cheaply, is traditional, and you can vary it lots of ways!. An easy one is:

A store-bought madeira cake, or a packet of trifle sponge fingers!. You can make it even cheaper if you can find a madeira cake that's on special (reduced for quick sale), as it doesn't need to be fresh!.
Some jam (apricot, strawberry, blackcurrant are all good)
Sliced strawberries (optional)
Some sweet sherry or some brandy (I like to use cream sherry), maybe 100ml or so!?
Made up 1 packet of strawberry jelly, not quite set but thickened
1 packet (or the equivalent) of Bird's Instant Custard, made up, cooled
1 packet Bird's Dessert Topping (or whipped double or whipping cream, slightly sweetened if liked)

Slice the cake and spread the slices (or the sponge fingers) with some jam!. Place them in a trifle dish, or a large bowl or casserole dish (whatever you have that will hold about 2-3 litres)!.
Sprinkle some sherry or brandy or brandy over the cake, not too much to get the cake soaked and mushy, but you still want to flavour it!.
Place the sliced strawberries over the cake, if using!.
Spread the thickened jelly over the berries and cake!. Put in the fridge and allow to set well!.
Pour and spread the custard over the jelly, and chill in the fridge!.
Spread the thickened cream over the custard!. You can top this with more strawberry slices if you like!.

Of course, you can make the custard from scratch if you like, or use ordinary Bird's powder, but the instant mix is easiest!.

I once made up a Tropical Trifle using Ginger Cake, no jam, Malibu, sliced bananas and pineapple jelly, regular custard and cream, and topped it with toasted shredded coconut!. Not traditional, but it was yummy!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Fritters-Flour,skellion,a pinch of salt,a few strips of salt fish[cod fish, optional]
put the pinch of salt in the flour but if you are using the salt fish you can forget about the salt!.Add the strips of salt fish to the flour with skellion for flavor, kneed the flour with water until it comes together like a dough!.Get you frying pan with vegetable oil or which ever oil you prefer!.Take a moderate amount of dough and roll it with a roller of just use you hands to flatten it, then put it in the oil until it looks dark brown ,flip the other side when it is done yummy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

cheese hot pot is my fave recipie!.

peel/ slice potatos into thing slices about 4mm thick so you have little wafer shaped things!.
layer them on the bottom of an ovenproof dish then a few slices of onion followed by a layer of grated cheese!. then a layer of potato!.!.!.then onion!.!.!. then cheese etc untill the dish is full!.
sprincle salt and black pepper on the top then fill the dish about 2/3 with milk!.

put the lid on then put in the oven!.!.!.!.
i normally put it on about 200-250 and just cook till the potatos are soft and the cheese should have melted and mixed with the cheese!. just serve it out with the juices just slightly drained!.

its really simple and cheep and it makes a few portions from one dish!.

alternitivly do it with corndbeef instead of cheese and very very thin gravey instead of milk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
