Answers:
hello

soaking them in warm water is not going to help if the pods are not of good quality to begin with!. You can try as there is no harm as long as the pods don't grow mold over it!.
vanilla needs to be kept in airtight containers to prevent them from getting dry!.

Here is a good website with lots of information on Madagascan vanilla and their prices are very competitive for the quality they supply:

Hope it helps!.

The first person it right, make your own vanilla extract by put them in a jar and pouring either low price brandy, dry/cream sherry or american whisky (bourbon) on them and allow then to rehydrate, you then can used the seeds and pod and even after there opened, drop the opened pods then back in the jar to add more flavour!.

I had the same experience with a large amount of Mexican vanilla, now it is hard to get it into my country (Canada), the Yanks think it is Hashish sometimes, I had a friend who had the same problem and the confiscated his, $20 C was lost!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
