Marzipan is made from ground almonds!. It's more commonly used on cakes in England, where the traditional celebration cake is a fruit cake!. The marzipan is used as a coating between the fruit cake and the fondant to keep dark juices from the fruit cake from seeping out and discoloring the fondant!. You could cover a cake in marzipan, but it's going to be a yellowish color and it doesn't take color kneaded in as well as fondant!.!.!.the powdered sugar will take the color, but the bits of almond don't!. It's also going to cost a fortune to get enough marzipan to cover even a small cake!.
You can't buy fondant in the grocery store!. You'll have to go to the craft store or cake decorating shop, or make your own!. The Wilton brand that is available at the craft stores is notorious for its unappealing flavor and unpleasant smell, so it might be a good idea to avoid it!. If you want to make your own, there are different recipes out there!. The most reliable one that I've tried is marshmallow fondant!. Here's the recipe that I use: http://whatscookingamerica!.net/PegW/Fond!.!.!.
I just made a batch of marshmallow fondant this afternoon and it took about 15 minutes!. You need to be sure you have a gallon bag to store it in because otherwise it will dry out!.
When you cover a cake in fondant, you need a thin coat of buttercream underneath the fondant, to help the fondant stick to the cake and also for the flavor!. For a 2 layer cake, the fondant needs to be rolled to the diameter of the cake pan plus 9 inches!.!.!.for example, if you're making a 2-layer 8 inch cake, you need a fondant circle that is 17 inches across!. The fondant will stick to the rolling surface!. Some people use cornstarch or powdered sugar or a mix of the two to prepare the surface!. I prefer using crisco, because you don't have to keep lifting the fondant and powdering the surface again!.
Here are some cakes I've done http://darkmindseye!.deviantart!.com/galle!.!.!. Anything that you see done in fondant was done with marshmallow fondant!. The fruit in my fruit bowl cake was marzipan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As above post said, it's a sweet almond paste!. You could use it between cakes, but I don't think you'd want to use it to cover cakes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
