Answers:
ROYAL ICING

Meringue (gets very hard, use for displays, etc!.)!.
1 lb!. powdered sugar
3 1/2 oz!. warm water (slightly less than 1/2 c!.)
1/2 tsp!. cream of tartar

Combine ingredients (mixing slowly), then beat at high speed for 7 to 10 minutes!. (Works best with a heavy-duty mixer!.) Keep covered at all times with a damp cloth or plastic wrap!. To restore texture later, simply re-beat!. 3 egg whites may be used in place of meringue powder and water!. Using egg whites will not yield as much volume and beating will not restore!.

ROYAL ICING (Meringue Powder)

3 tbsp!. meringue powder
1 lb!. confectioners' sugar
6 tbsp!. warm water (in humidity use less water)

Beat all ingredients until icing forms peaks at low speed!. Yield approximately 3 cups!.

hope these help!. good luck and enjoy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My favorite thing to frost sugar cookies with is buttercream frosting!. Here is a basic vanilla recipe:

http://allrecipes!.com/Recipe/Special-But!.!.!.

This would be good if you wanted to color the frosting for a decorative effect, but there's also a chocolate variant!. I don't know if you'd want chocolate on a sugar cookie though!.

If you want to avoid excessive sweetness, just don't put as much sugar!. Add it gradually (and make sure it's sifted or the frosting will be lumpy) to taste!. You might also try a cream cheese frosting which is always delicious and it would add a tanginess to the cookies!.

this is an icing recipe I ALWAYS use for my sugar cookies:

2 large egg whites

2 tsp vanilla (or 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice)

3 cups confectioners sugar, sifted!.!.

In the bowl of your electric mixer (or with a hand mixer), beat the egg whites with the lemon juice!. Add the sifted powdered sugar and beat on low speed until combined and smooth!. The icing needs to be used immediately or transferred to an airtight container as royal icing hardens when exposed to air!. Cover with plastic wrap when not in use!.

Add any type of food coloring you want spoon on cookies and spread, let cookies rest on a rack while icing dries!.!.!. ussualy takes 12 hours for it to completely dry!.

I mad Vday cookies this was and shipped them acrross country to Cali to my BF!.!.!. mmm soo good!!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I use rolled fondant on my sugar cookies!. This is the recipe that I use: http://whatscookingamerica!.net/PegW/Fond!.!.!. I use the same cookie cutter to cut the fondant that I used for the cookie, and put it on the cookie when it's hot out of the oven (but take it off the cookie sheet first)!. It's a really neat look for cookies, and tastes good too!. Here's some of my cookies: http://darkmindseye!.deviantart!.com/art/A!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

In a large bowl, cream together the confectioners' sugar and shortening until smooth!. Gradually mix in the milk and vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth and stiff, about 5 minutes!. Color with food coloring if desired!.

Really good I make it all the time
Www@FoodAQ@Com

4+1/2 cups confectioners sugar
1/4 cup shortening
4 T of water
1 t of vanilla extract
1+1/2 t of almond extract

The almond in this recipe makes the cookies extra good and people will be asking what special flavor is in them!. Trust me! add more sugar of water depending on desired consistency!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Google it!. Make sure you get one that has egg whites or meringue powder in it!. That's what makes the frosting get firm so it doesn't melt on to your hands or other cookies!.
The last one I had, had confectioner's sugar, lemon juice, egg whites and water!. Mix to desired consistency!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

What about cream cheese frosting!. MMMmmmmm Most people seem to like it and you can make the cosistancy the way you prefer thick or thin!. Here is a site that might help!.!.!.!. Happy Baking
