What can I use as a substitute for bread when camping?!
I am going camping and don't want to take regular bread as it will go off far too quickly!. Does anybody have any ideas for a bread substitute or some kind of long life bread recipe!? Thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
make your own:
this is the traditional camping bread
this is a rustic recipe so don't worry too much about quantities
a mug of self raising flour
3 tbl olive oil (or butter/marg)
enough water to make a stiff dough
whatever things you have to make it interesting:
savoury: olives, sun dried tomatoes, mixed herbs, sausages bits, etc
sweet: dried mixed fruit, mixed spice, seeds like pumpkin, sunflower etc
mix all the dry ingredients together in a sealy bag and take it with you camping!. when you are ready to cook it mix the water into the dry mix, add the water a little at a time cos you can't take it out!.
either heat a little oil in a small shallow pan, squash the mix into a flat cake and cook it slowly, turning it a few times to cook it evenly
or roll into long sausage shapes and wrap the mix round a stick this is best cooked over a camp fire!.
this is te traditional way that native americans made bread!.
we take a few bannock mixes and pitta bread on camping trips in a canoe and it lasts!.!.!.

We've never had a problem with bread going bad when we go camping!.
What are you making that you need to substitute bread for!? If it's meatloaf (or meatballs or stuffed zucchini, etc)- use crackers or crushed croutons, even crushed stove top stuffing could work!.
If it's for sandwiches - try pita bread or french bread or hamburger buns!. Or bagels!. Or english muffins!.

In the old days they took hardtack on trails and to sea!. It was a dehydrated bread, sort of like a cracker!. So, I'd take some big plain crackers!. Theyre pretty much the same thing as bread minus the yeast and moisture!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
you can get naan bread in a sealed packet!. you only get about two pieces in a packet so if you get plenty of packets it wont go off Www@FoodAQ@Com
Try something with less moisture like pitta bread - It'll last well!. Or if you have some flash cooking gear, buy part baked rolls & cook them in tin foil as required!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
