Answers:
Put both!. Use a layer of buttercream underneath the fondant!. It will provide a cushion for the fondant and help it look smoother!. It will also add to the moistness of the cake!. Without a layer of buttercream or jam, the fondant won't stick to the cake!. I prefer buttercream to jam!. I've tried both and the jam is sticky enough that it's hard to smooth out the fondant enough!.
also, if you're using store-bought fondant, it doesn't taste good and people will peel it off, so having a layer of buttercream underneath will make the cake a lot better!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Fondant replaces the icing!. It's easier to get the cake surface smooth for decorating with fondant!. Put a crumb coat** of icing on to help the fondant adhere to the cake!.
** A crumb coat is a thin coat of icing used to keep the cake crumbs from messing up your final icing!. Sort of a sealer!. Be sure to brush off the crumbs with a pastry brush or your hands before doing the crumb coat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Fondant is in place of an icing!.!.!. But fondant isn't sweet like icing!. It's meant for molding!. If you're just covering the cake normally and not molding anything creative out of it, I would just use regular icing!. Have fun!Www@FoodAQ@Com
I do think that fondant is beautiful on a wedding cake and then decorate it, but the icing is so pretty and you can swirt and decorate as you please, all in what one likes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
