Question: To make homemade ice cream do I need an ice cream making machine!? or can I somehow use a freezer!?
Answers:
Yup! You sure can make homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker - just using your freezer!

I've made ice cream without an ice cream maker several times!

The first thing you have to do is mix up your base!.

Here’s the recipe for vanilla ice cream!

1 cup milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 1/2 - 2 tsp vanilla extract

After you’ve mixed the ingredients together, put this mixture in the fridge for 1 hour then transfer to the freezer for 30 min!.

Beat with an electric mixer!. Freeze for 40 min then beat again!. Continue freezing for 40 min and then beating - do this cycle 3 times!. Then you can allow it to harden up by itself!.
If you don't have an ice cream maker - it's important to beat it to allow air into the ice cream mixture to make it soft!. The beating also prevents ice crystals from forming!

You can spice up this recipe by adding fun mix-ins like crumbled Oreos for Cookies and Cream or Chocolate Chips and Cookie Dough Balls for Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream!.

This is the quick version of ice cream making without an ice cream maker! If you want a more detailed description or a different recipe - you can check out

We used to make ice cream with the kids way back when I was a preschool teacher!. Here's how we did it!. In principle it's the same method that "G", previous poster presented!. Here's a recipe!.

? 1/2 cup white sugar
? 1 tablespoon instant vanilla pudding mix
? 1 cup milk
? 1 cup half-and-half cream
? 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
? 1 cup rock salt
? 1 pound crushed ice

DIRECTIONS
1!. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, sugar, instant pudding, milk, half and half and vanilla!. Pour the mixture into a 12 ounce size coffee can!. Cover the top with plastic wrap, and then the plastic lid!. Place the filled coffee can into an empty 34!.5 ounce coffee can (the big ones)!. Fill the empty space with crushed ice, sprinkle generously with rock salt, and cover with the plastic lid!.

2!. Roll the cans around on the floor for about 20 minutes!. If the center of the ice cream is still soft, place the containers in the freezer to harden!. This won't take long!.!.!.30 minutes at most!.

You can make ice cream in the freezer of your refrigerator, but it won't be as smooth and creamy as that made in an ice cream freezer!.

There are paddles inside the ice cream freezer that constantly stir the mix as it freezes!. They make it smooth and creamy!.

You can find ice cream recipes by searching the internet at yahoo!.com or you can buy them at most grocery stores or Wal-Mart!.

That experiment you did was all about thermal transfer!. The salt melts the ice at a lower temperature than 32 degrees!. That allows the very cold (below freezing) water to get good contact with the inner bag and heat can transferr out of the ice cream mix into the ice water, eventually freezing the ice cream mix!.

If you didn't put the salt in the water touching the inner bag would be warmer than 32 degrees!. And the ice cream would not freeze!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you can use a freezer but you put the mixture in a freezer-safe container, and then once the mixture has frozen about 3cm round the edge, fold this into the centre and put back in the freezer!. then stir the mixture about every hour (this stops large ice crystals forming)
good luck Www@FoodAQ@Com

I remember doing this in biology class!. We took the cream and sugar and vanilla (some other stuff too I think) and mixed it in medium size plastic bag!. Then we put it the medium sized bag into a larger bag which was filled with ice and salt and just shook it around until we had Ice cream! I think that's it went at least!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

an ice cream machine is the best way to go!. Simply putting the prepared cream in the freezer will give you more ice than cream!.
Icy cream is good, but if you want smooth, creamy texture go for the machine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
