Answers:
you could spell out happy birthday with mini chocolate chips, red hot candies, or nuts!. I do like the other person's suggestion of adding food coloring to a bit of the icing and putting it in the baggie, and cutting off the tip to write with it!. I have done this myself in a pinch!. Put some frosting in a plastic baggie and snip a tiny bit off of the corner then squeeze out frosting and write your message!. If you are frosting the cake with chocolate and are writing with chocolate, you can lighten the writing frosting with a little milk or cool whip or even cream cheese!. Start with a little bit or you will ruin it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You need some plain buttercream frosting!. Is there a box of confectioners sugar around!? There is a recipe on the back -- but don't make up the whole recipe, cut it down by 1/4!. Then you can take a piece of parchment paper, roll it into a cone, and fill up with the frosting!. Snip off the end -- just a bit -- and decorate the cake!. Work out how big your letters are so you don't end up with HAPPY BIRTHD(edge of cake)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I dont know if you have sour cream but if you do!. mix a little with sugar and put in a icing cake decorator if you have one and write or print happy birthday on the cake with that!. but if you dont have anything for decorating just use a tooth pick and carve happy birthday in the frosting!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

1!. get a sandwich bag
2!. get scissors and cut a little corner out of the bottom right corner
3!. fill sandwich bag with frosting(change color with food coloring first if you don't want it the color it comes in)
4!. write carefully on the cake in cursive(cursive is more fancy and pretty)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Powdered sugar, and water!.

Just add enough water, so it's not too thick, and not too much water, so it's not too watery!.

And, then if you want to add color, just add it to that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you have a piping bag with a small tip you can use that, add some food coloring to the frosting and it will work great!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Use the long liquorice straps and cut them with scissors!.
I did a clock face with Roman numerals this way!.
It looked striking on white background!.
Good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
