Melon and Parma Ham Starter?!
Hi all, I am planning to cook a lovely three course meal for my hubby for his birthday, I would like to do melon as a starter and I have thought of various ways of doing it, but I found on the internet that you can serve melon with parma ham! I have never tried parma ham so I dont know what it tastes like or weather it will actually compliment the melon or not, so I need some help with this please!? also any other suggestions you may have on serving melon would be of much use, please dont include strawberries with your suggestions as that is part of my eton mess pudding!. Thanks Www@FoodAQ@Com

Parma ham is the same thing as prosciutto, which is dry cured ham which has not been cooked!. As a first course, particularly in warm weather, it is served wrapped around honeydew or cantaloupe!.
It is a rather salty, tougher type of lunch meat, and because of the saltiness and texture it is a good match with melons!. I have also served it wrapped around blanched or lightly steamed asparagus!. If you want to do some type of salad, you could do a caprese salad with it: fresh mozzarella, tomato, parma, basil, drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper and a little balsamic if you so choose!.
Most melon recipes I am familiar with involve balling melons and serving as a melon salad!. I like the sophisticated twist of parma wrapped melon and the salty meat is a nice accompaniment to the sweet melon!. Be sure to put them together and then keep them well chilled before serving!.

Parma ham is the Italian cured ham you see in the delicatessens!. It compliments melon beautifully!. I suppose this is old-fashioned now, but we used to consider it very a elegant starter!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

On Saturday my husband cooked a 9 course meal for ten members of my family as it was my Mum and Dads 45th wedding anniversary!.
One of the courses was Cantaloupe melon cut into thin strips, laid on Parma Ham, a little bit of grated Gruyere (sorry don't know how to spell that!) cheese on top and them rolled up in the ham like a sushi roll!. He then baked the whole thing for about 15 mins and cut it into little portions!. It was FANTASTIC! So so tasty, I thort the melon would go horrible when cooked but it didn't, it went intense and gorgeous!. So I would deff recommend it!. If you want any more details with it please feel free to email me and I'll help as much as I can!. All the best with the meal :-)Www@FoodAQ@Com
