There was just this same question addressed on The Food Network show "Food Detectives" (i think that's the name), and they demonstrated the various "tricks" to cutting onions without crying, all of which have been listed above!. Oddly, only one person suggested the very answer that was demonstrated as being the "only way" to cut onions tear-free!.!.!.chill your onions for a half an hour (or more) before cutting to slow-down the gasses that are released when you slice an onion!. this way seems to work great for me at home, because I store my onions in the crisper of my fridge!. HOWEVER, when I am at work, I don't have a choice where the onions are kept, so I peel them, cut off the top & bottom, slice in half, and WASH under cold water!. this seems to have close to the same effect!. i do feel a little teary-eyed at work, but not enough that it's a problem!. good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Chewing gum while chopping onions will absorb the odor that cause your tear ducts to be irritated!. also you can use a piece of bread just hold it in your mouth!. Cutting next to an open flame may help or use a food processor!. Mainly anything to get the odor form rising through the air into your tear ducts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

the element of the onion gas that causes your eyes to sting and water is attracted to moisture- hence why it goes straight to your eyes!.

i've found that it's easiest to just open your mouth, breathe through your mouth while cutting onions, and normally its not so bad!.

hope it works for you, but if not- my grandmother always wore goggle while cutting onions- it works too :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

yeah the thing that makes you cry is some sort of thing that comes out of the onion (very hard to see with the naked eye) and basically floats all over the place!. so if you get a fan to blow it away it will not make your eyes water!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

a bowl of warmish water with a few drops of lemon juice placed right in between you and the chopping board!.!.it works :P

also to get the smell of cut onion off your hands!.!.wash them with lemon juice :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

you put a glass or a bowl of water beside where you cut ur onion, the more the better, or you leave the sink on (but thats wasteful!!!!!) , btw sunglassed dont work!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
