Can i still cook this meat?!

Question: Can i still cook this meat!?
thursday afternoon (august 21st) i had taken out about 2 pounds of ground beef (85% lean) to make burgers!. i didn't have enough time to make them, so my dad put it in the refrigerator and said he would use it over the weekend, but he didn't end up making anything either!.

now he wants me to make the burgers for dinner tomorrow night (august 25th), but i don't know if the meat is still good!.

can anyone help me out here!? i really don`t want that meat to go to waste!.!. but i'd rather not spend the last week of summer with food poisoning or worse >!.<

it partially defrosted (about 50-75%) out on the counter, but has been in a bowl in the refrigerator covered with saran wrap since thursday night (the 21st)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
if its only partially defrosted then yes it will be fine!

If its fully thawed then you need to check the following

smell - if it smells like garbage

color - if the outside is light grey and then u look inside the meat its not bright pink or red

It's lost its meaty bloody juice

thawed meat normally has a 3 day window that it will be goodWww@FoodAQ@Com

smell it!. if it smells funky, dont use it!. ask for the opinion of everyone in your house!. go with the majority!. in the future, tightly wrap meat in ziplocks or saranwrap then freeze it, even if you might use it the next day!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Smell it, if it smells spoiled then it isn't any good and i don't think it is but if u want to cook it, make sure to cook it over 180 degrees!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would not!. You have really gone over the limit!. So much bacteria has grown in it for these past few days!. I am surprised you do not smell it when you open the refrigerator!. WOW!. Not worth the risk!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It should be ok but smell it to make sure and if there is even a slight whiff then toss it!. also, cook the meat to 160*f just to be safe!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dont use it!.!.!.what i do is take it back to the store (krogers) and they let me switch it without a receipt!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

It should be OKAY!. Just use your senses to determine if anything looks or smells funny!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

To eat or not to eat

If the meat did not defrost at room temperature for more than 1 hour you are ok!.

Food in the danger zone for more than 1 hour is a serious problem!.

Danger zone

40-140 F is where bacteria grow!.

40 F or lower bacteria growth is slower

above 140 bacteria bacteria start to get killed

cooking meat at 160 F or higher kill bacteria related to the food poisoning strains!.

The bacteria are not what cause the problems!. It is the toxins they produce!. the toxins are what make you sick!.

so keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot!.

always defrost in the fridge and store meats on the bottom shelf!.

meats will stay edible for 4-5 days after defrosting in the fridge

rule of thumb

never have any meat in the fridge longer than 7 days!.

That allows you to plan 1 week of food / meat in the fridge
