If you keep your mouth closed while cutting it helps!. If you cut them inside a walk in freezer, your eyes will not tear!. If your eyes are burning, stick your head into the freezer [don't detach it from your body ;-) ] to take the burn away!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Elton Brown's show taught me that if you light a candle or gas stove and cut an onion next to it, the flame helps get rid of the fumes!. I didn't listen to the science part of it, but I have tried it several times and it works!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There is a mild form of hydrochloric acid that mists out from them that affects the eyes!.
tips
Use an extremely sharp knife and slice rather than chop!.
