I really feel for you, that pain is the worst!!! :(
Peel the potatoes and chop them into roughly inch-thick pieces!. Then put them in a pan of cold water, make sure the water is about an inch above covering the potatoes and then bring them to the boil!. Continue to boil for 18 minutes and then test if they're done by pricking with a fork,if they fall off easily (without you having to push them off or shake the fork) then they're done,if not, give them a couple more minutes until they are!.
Carefully drain off the water and return the potatoes to the pan!. Take the potato masher and begin to crush the potatoes with it,stop briefly and at this point, add a large nob of butter and a large splash of milk and then continue mashing-really going to work this time!!. The result will be lovely, creamy mashed potatoes!.
You could add grated cheese to the mash,or swap a couple of potatoes for sweet potato or carrots for tasty alternatives!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Cover potatoes with water sufficient to cover in a heavy-bottomed pan!. Cover and bring to a boil!. Reduce heat slightly and simmer until potatoes are fork-tender!.
Drain potatoes and set aside!. Return empty pan to heat and add some butter, leaving until butter melts!. In a separate pan, bring cream or milk to boil (do not allow to curdle; remove from heat immediately when it starts to boil)!.
Mash the potatoes, beating in the butter and half&half, cream or milk, and salt and pepper, until potatoes are smooth and fluffy!.
NOW, to make it really yummy, add some garlic cloves to the boiling potatoes and mash along with the potatoes or
Add washbi (green Janpanese mustard) to the masked potatoes, or
Add grated cheese while still hot, or
Add cooked carrots, parsnips, or cabbage to the potatoes, or
Saute onions until soft and golden brown and add to the mashed potatoes
ALL very good
