Answers:
take a cold macaroni salad or you could take chips and dip or buy some asparagus and wrap with roast beef!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Unless you know what others are bringing, taking the "normal" side dishes runs the risk of having duplicates!. I take either an unusual salad (people always ask for the recipe) or an unusual dessert (from my grandmother's recipe collection)

Thai Salad

2 packages Ramen noodles – crushed – do not use seasoning packet
? cup sunflower seeds
? cup slivered almonds
? cup (I stick) butter/margarine
Sauté all above until golden, set aside to cool

Chop 1 head Napa cabbage
Chop 1 bunch green onions

1 cup oil
1 cup sugar
? cup white vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Combine all ingredients just before serving

2 ? cups apple juice
2 t baking soda
2 t cinnamon

? Add oil, eggs and walnuts!.

Sweet & Sour pasta

1 pound rotini pasta
4 carrots, shredded
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 onion, diced
1 cup distilled white vinegar
1 cup white sugar
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
2 cups mayonnaise
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil!. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain!.
In large bowl, combine pasta, carrot, green pepper and onion!. In medium bowl, combine vinegar, sugar, condensed milk, mayonnaise, salt and pepper!. Toss salad with dressing and chill 4 hours in refrigerator before serving!.

ETA: I made this it's very runny, and it's more of a 'sweet n sour' pasta, due to the amount of vinegar in it!. The original recipe called for 2 C which is what I used when it was very runny!.The 2nd time I made it, I only used 1 C of vinegar & it was much more 'sticky"It's still very good tasting though! I skipped the bell pepper because I don't care for it & didn't use as much onion as the recipe called for ~ Www@FoodAQ@Com
