Why do mussels open up when you cook them?!

Question: Why do mussels open up when you cook them!?
I've always been curious about this!. Is it the steam inside the mussels that forces them to open!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
because they are live until you boil/steam them!. When they die they open!. They lose their "footing" as that is the term for how they keep their shells closed so tightly!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

its the muscles of the mussels that hold them closed!. once the mollusk is steamed it dies and can longer keep the shell closedWww@FoodAQ@Com

Well if someone steamed you to death you might pop open too :pWww@FoodAQ@Com

No, it's because when they die, the muscles holding the shell closed relax!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

because before you boil them, they are alive!. once they die, they open!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
