It is when you take a double boiler and put water in the lower pan and what you are steaming in the upper pan!. You put the upper pan on top of the lower pan and add heat!. The water in the lower pan will generate steam that will steam cook what you have in the upper pan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A steamer is a device that cooks using steam!. Nearly all nutrients are retained, as opposed to boiling which leaches out nutrients!. The most efficient and reasonable steamer is an Asian bamboo steamer!. It fits on top of a wok which contains boiling water!. Food you place in the steamer has steam passed through it!.

Sounds like you might be talking about a double boiler, or some form of one!.
A large pot on the bottom!. Usually with a choice of either a colander (thing with holes in it) that fits on top, or a smaller pot that fits on it, both to be over the boiling water!. Then a lid!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
