Question for other bakers out there?!

Question: Question for other bakers out there!?
in school the "cooking" teacher said that when we measure flour we first need to add air to the flour by stirring it and to not just scoop it in, we were to use a spoon and spoon in the flour she said that otherwise the flour was compacted and that we were getting way more flour than we needed

but on tv they just scoop

so who's right
im thinking that she might be right bc on tv they have ppl to make their stuff look good on camera, so it doesn't matter how much flour they addWww@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Yes, you should always spoon your flour!. It is a light powdery substance and will compact almost infinitely!. It needs to be kept loose and airy to measure properly!. Other wise a cup could become a cup and a half or even two cups!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends, if the recipe calls for sifted flour you should sift the flour first then spoon it into a measuring cup and level it!. Most recipes will stand up to some variation in the amount of flour, the recipes that won't usually give amounts is ounces or grams and the ingredients should be weighed for best results!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would recommend to ALWAYS spoon your flour!.

I took several different cooking classes during school!.

Plus, if you scoop your flour you are packing it and are always getting more than you need!. If you spoon the flour into the cup you are getting the exact amount!. (Same goes for things like butter and crisco, baking soda/powder!.)

Trust me, in cooking class I ended up with people who scooped and packed their flour, which resulted in HUGE loaves of bread, cookies, pies, etc that tasted like dry flour!.

PLEASE DON'T SCOOP! :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

i'm with ten walker, i used to spoon my flour, but recently i just shook up the flour container and scooped and shook and it's just as good and i'd go as far as saying better, in the days when i would spoon my flour, sometimes i didn't have enough flour and need to add moreWww@FoodAQ@Com

your teacher is correct!. the old version of many recipes has you sift the flour first and then measure it!. As an experiment, do it both ways and you will see that she is correct!. What is on tv is!.!.!.!.well!.!.!.!.!.television and there are many cooking steps glossed over on many of the shows!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I never spoon in the flour!. I fluff just a little with the measuring cup (a kind of scoop-and-dump) then SCOOP! and I even level it off by giving it a little shake!

I have no answer for you just to say thanks for asking LOL
I just learnt something!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I also fluff, then scoop!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

hmm, it may be a little lesser flour than if it was scooped and less packed!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
