Answers:
It's not just fat from animals!. I've been using vegetable shortening for years!. It's probably close by the margarine in the supermarket!. you can also replace shortening with margarine or butter in most recipes!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

shortening is a type of oil/greese that is solid like a creamy white substance it can be found at any grocery store or be substituded with cooking oil (sometimes) and YES they would know exactly what you are talking about no one would look at you funny AND, it is NOT always made from animale fat!!!! read labelsWww@FoodAQ@Com

First, What shortening is NOT!.!.!.Its not lard or animal fat!.For cakes you would use an all purpose shortening and most A/P shortenings are made with soy oil or cottonseed oil!. The process used to turn this liquid oil into a solid is called partial hydrogenation's!. There are products out there like palm oil that reduce the trans fats(only if you eat the serving size) because they do not require hydrogenation's!. The best advise is "all things in moderation"Www@FoodAQ@Com

In the UK:
Animal fat: Suet, margarine, butter = any kind of solid fat
Vegetarian: TREX or PURA ( available in every super market)

In the US and Australia: CRISCOWww@FoodAQ@Com

Ask for Crisco shortening, it's in the aisle where you can buy flour, sugar, cake mixes!. It's in a blue and yellow can!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
