There really is quite a sea of solutions!. Your ingredients and equipment depend on the food you are going to prepare!. A few things I keep handy that generally work for many cooking adventures are:
1) Parchment paper -- Line your baking sheets and cake pans with this stuff or wrap it around some types of dishes and tie with twine before baking (so twine is potentially a good thing to have, too)
2) Large heavy-duty aluminum baking pans (also known as cookie sheets) -- nonstick is not a requirement -- and a variety of cookware ranging from lightweight aluminum stock pots to heavy stainless steel saucepans
3) A Kitchen-Aid stand-mixer -- be sure to invest in a bowl-lift type and don't buy one on eBay (you don't get the same warranty)
4) A good-quality oven thermometer (you will use it every time you bake to be sure your oven is behaving) and a good quality meat or candy thermometer for stove-top cooking
5) A couple of good-quality kitchen timers
6) Oven mitts and cooling racks -- you'll want several sizes of the latter
7) Pyrex liquid measuring cup and stainless steel dry measuring cups; good-quality stainless steel measuring spoons
8) Stainless steel mixing bowls of various sizes and smaller Pyrex bowls for setting out your measured ingredients
9) A flour sifter and a way to make plenty of ice when needed
10) Excellent quality knives -- for a starter set, you'll just need a paring knife and a big one to chop with
Don't get tricked into buying anything too specialized or expensive unless you are positive you absolutely need it!. A lot of things that supposedly take a special tool can be done just as easily and efficiently with something you already have!.
Most important!? Stay relaxed and pay attention!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Looks like everyone covered the baking staples!. As for the cooking stuff: I like to use onion and garlic in almost everything I make!. also keep chicken boullion on hand to add flavor to soups and stews!. Get a good knife, cutting board and a frying pan w/lid and a large saucepan!.I love to cook and have since I could get on a chair and stir the "sauce" on the stove!.

the list can be long, depending on how much baking versus cooking you do!. The nice thing is each ingredient especially spices, will last a while and are good for more than one thing!.
My list:
all purpose flour
sugar
powdered sugar
brown sugar
salt
pepper
baking soda
baking powder
cinnamon
nutmeg
vanilla
garlic or garlic powder
onion or onion powder
chili powder
cumin
Italian seasoning or oregano
oil
vinegar
These I would consider the basics!. I personally like to include Beef soup base, chicken soup base and ham or pork soup base to use as a flavor enhancer!. I get the ones without MSG
For canned goods I keep at least 4 of each of the following:
cream of mushroom soup
cream of chicken soup
tomato sauce
tomato paste
diced tomatos
stewed tomatos
chili beans
I love to cook but did not know how when I got married!. I did learn though and totally enjoy making or creating a new recipe and watching my family chow down in enjoyment!. Have fun!Www@FoodAQ@Com
