I do cake decorating and there are some fabulous ideas out there!. As far as tools or padlocks I would use candy melts!. You can get them on the Wilton isle at Michaels!. There is chocolate and white chocolate!. If you want to use the white chocolate and color it you can but just make sure you use an oil based food coloring (also in the Wilton isle) melt the chocolate according to the directions on the back!. fill a bag with out a tip with the chocolate!. Find a sketch of a tool or padlock and then put wax paper over the top of it and trace it with the chocolate!. It is amazing what you can do!. I recommend The Whimsical Bakehouse book by Liv Hansen!. It has the chocolate method in it and many sketches including tools!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Well pretty much the thing I would use to make such a cake would be baked cake cut into the shapes I need!. For the lid bake a cake in a rectangular or square pan then when you take it out cut it into the size you need and use wooden cake support sticks inserted into the cake and the cake lid, this will give it support so it won't fall off the cake, but don't cut the lid too thin because it won't work!.After you put the lid on the toolbox then you can ice it to match the box!. For the handle I would maybe bake a gingerbread cookie in the shape of a handle and pad lock then make some royal icing and decorate it with the right colors!. I suggest a gingerbread cookie decorated with royal icing because this type of icing gets hard and if you color it with food coloring when its soft it hardens really cute!.
Another alternative would be to use fondant but this takes more skill and I think its more labor intensive!.
Hope this helps!Www@FoodAQ@Com
