Answers:
You get this stuff called Caramel Treat that you can use or you can make your own by placing the condensed milk can in a pot and covering it with water!. it must stay covered or it may explode!.!.!. then you boil it slowly over the stove!. i am not sure how long though!. but the best bet is the Nestle Caramel Treat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

to caramilise sweetened condensed milk:

Oven method; Pour 1 can sweetened condensed milk into 9 inch pie plate!. Cover with foil; place in larger shallow pan!. Fill larger pan with hot water!. Bake at 425 degrees for 1 1/2 hours or until thick and caramel colored!. Beat until smooth!.

Stovetop Method: Pour 1 can condensed milk into top of double boiler; place over boiling water!. Over low heat, simmer 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until thick and caramel colored!. Beat until smooth!.

Microwave Method: Pour 1 can condensed milk into 2 quart glass measure!. cook on 50 % power (medium) for 4 minutes, stirring briskly every 2 minutes until smooth!. cook on 30% power (medium-low) 12-18 minutes ot until very thick and caramel colored, stirring briskly every 2 minutes until smooth!.

to caramalise means to heat sugar untill it turnes into caramel!. traditionally this is done by a flame to powdered sugar (eg creme brulee) however when using it in a recipie all you are doing is solidifying the sugars in the condensed milk!. this is done to form a more solid product, and also to enhance flavourWww@FoodAQ@Com

You need to use SWEETENED Condensed Milk!. Put the UNOPENED can in a saucepan and COVER it with water (you may put the can on it's side, doesn't matter)!. Boil on the stove for 3 hours!. While it is boiling, turn the can over once in a while to mix the contents and cook it evenly!. Be sure to cool this enough before opening so you don't burn yourself!. VERY IMPORTANT: The can must be COVERED with water at all times or it can explode!. You may have to add water to the saucepan now and then as it boils away!. I know 3 hours is a lot, but that is how it's done!. I have heard of the oven method also, but I don't know what it is - the benefit of that is that you don't have to watch it and keep adding water to the pot!. What you have made is called Dulce de Leche in Latin cultures!. If you have access to a Latin market, you might be able to purchase Dulce de Leche already prepared, but it is MUCH better if you make it yourself!. also, as a very last resort, you can substitute caramel ice cream topping from the grocery store!. My grandma used to make this and pour it over vanilla ice cream - heavenly!Www@FoodAQ@Com

sounds yummy!
do they mean sweetened condensed milk!?
i would think so, because usually to carmelize you need sugar!.!.!.
I would think putting it in a non-stick frying pan and letting it reduce down slowly would carmelize it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

easier than putting it in an oven!? ummmm, I'm at a loss here!. caramelize means to heat it until it turns a caramel color!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
