Why do so many americans have trouble cooking?!

Question: Why do so many americans have trouble cooking!?
Im 15 and Ive made 2 dinners in the past week and they were amazing!.

The first one was a chicken breast covered in melted cheese and a cilantro/onion/lime sauce i made myself with mexican rice and garlic potatoes

The second one I made was a spicy grilled chicken with grilled veggies

They were just as good as any restraunt ive been too, and the chicken was juicy and tender!. And the thing is, It was all instinct!. No cook book or parental help!.

Yet at school in Health I am learning that alot of americans cant cook worth crap or dont know how too, so they just buy food and get fat!. And i can see this in the real world too, i hear countless times people say "cooking is hard" or "i hate cooking, i suck at it" or the classic "Im just now perfecting toast"Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have seen fat people of many cultures, America really doesn't corner the market on it!. I don't know what excuses other countries use but our obesity problems are more related to our national aversion to exercise than to what we eat!. As we do not limit ourselves to one or two ethnic cuisines alone but explore other cultures, American cuisine is the most adventurous and interesting cuisine in the world!.

(PS -- If you still harbor the mistaken notion that Americans are the ones who can't cook, you should visit England sometime!.) Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm glad you're enjoying cooking and seem to do it with ease!. Maybe you've observed your parents cooking so learned without trying!. I think a lot of Americans have trouble because they haven't observed or tried as well as Home Ec is no longer required!. When I was in school, all girls to junior high home economics while the boys took wood shop! Obviously, I'm much older than you - 40 years older to be precise! But my mother was a home ec teacher, so I learned from her even before junior high!.

Hope you love cooking and baking the rest of your life, like I do!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well I think this is very offensive seeing as I am American and love to cook home made things!. My family does as well!. For you to judge americans by what you read in a book is very naive of you!. Broaden your horizons and visit America sometime!. Maybe you'll see the real cultures of good food!. I live in Louisiana and we have thousands of fabulous cooks!. The whole United States does!. Our food may not be better than Italy or any other famous fab place but we cook and we love what we cook!. Stop being naive!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Believe it or not not all Americans are fat and don't know how to cook!. Keep your opinions to yourself!. And don't believe everything you hear!. American food is the best in the world because it is a combination of many foods!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Cooking is not hard!. Just learn to use spices it really makes your food take good!. Most american don't cook their food with the write spices or none at all!. Thats why they rather go to a fast food resturant!. Because their own food don't taste good to them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not sure I would have a lime sauce w cheese - but to your question alot of it is time, or lack of!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Stop making generalizations about a whole population based on a few people!. Just as there are american who can't cook there are some that can!. I'm sure the same thing can be said about people from other countries!. I think the factors for increased obesity have to do more with lots of americans being on the go and wanting things now!. Its easier to go to a restaurant and fast food place then it is to cook!. also with the hectic schedule that most people live sometimes finding the time can be difficult!. Another factor is the cost of food!. Often times its cheaper to buy processed and microwaveable foods than healthy fresh fruits and vegetables especially if you are feeding a large family!. A lot of times people buy what they can afford even if it may not be the best thing for them!. also you can't expect a person to eat healthy if they were not taught that!. Another factor is technology, video games and computers are more popular than exercise!. Obesity is actually a global problem caused by many contributing factors!. Educate yourself instead of making assumptions!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

What part of America are YOU talking about!?!? Ever been to the South!? No!? Me, neither, but I heard their food is really good (that made no sense, whatever)!.

Anyway, I don't think that a lack of cooking skills is a regional thing!. There are some people who just can't cook, and I think it's quite sad!.

also, you have to define "knowing how to cook"!. There are some people who think that slapping some salt and pepper on a chicken is cooking!. To me, that's lame!. I'm all about seasoning and spices!. I don't do bland food!. Again, it varies from person to person!.

EDIT: There may be something to your theory, though!. I guess people who can't cook tend to reach for the fast food menus more often!. I think Home Ec should be a requirement, or at least available in schools (though it should offered to boys and girls)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, you see Bobby, the reason Americans have trouble cooking is because cooking was invented by bears in the early 1700th century!. They created this method of 'making' food as a way to easily feed themselves!. Once humans defeated the mighty acne bear overlord, and turned him into many mini acne bears that scattered the globe to different neighborhoods, they stole this technique called 'cooking'!. Europeans were able to use it very well, as they had no opposable thumbs, just like Bears!. Americans, on the other hand, had opposable thumbs, and were not as skilled as cooking because of this!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
