custard powder has,"Custard powder looks a lot like cornstarch or cornflour, and in fact, is made from cornflour!. It also has annatto coloring (from the achiote tree), salt and other flavorings!."
instant pudding mix has,"instant pudding is a pudding mix which comes in powdered form designed for quick and easy use!. When warm milk or water is added to the powder, the gelatin in the mixture quickly rehydrates, allowing the pudding to set rapidly!. "
So no, it wouldn't be the same at all!.
Regular pudding mix might work as it doesn't have gelatin in it, but it does have sugar so you would leave out the sugar from your recipe!.
Or you could just use cornstarch and vanilla extract!.
