Why is a toad in the hole called that?!

Question: Why is a toad in the hole called that!?
Answers:
The origin of the name 'Toad-in-the-Hole' is vague!. Most suggestions are that the dish's resemblance to a toad sticking its little head out of a hole provide the dish with its somewhat unusual name!. Might also be because of a old pub game by that name!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it is just really because it looks like a toad hiding in a hole!. The egg has a yellow part, which would be analogous to the frog's green part, and a white part, which the frog has also!.

I have also heard it called Iggy in the Basket, which makes me think that you could basically call it _______ in the _______, and fill in the blanks with anything!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I suppose you could say it comes from the fact that frogs are a delicacy and although I've not tried it, but the flavour is improved if cooked in a batter!. Hence toad in the hole!.

We Brits are not keen on frogs so replace that with sausage!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Toad in the hole is basically sausages in a batter, but the sausages stick out a little, and the dark crispy skin of the sausage resembles the skin of a toad, so it kind of looks like a toad hiding in the batter, or a hole!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

The British like to make up interesting names for their food!.

there's also rarebit yum sometimes pronounced rabbit

coddled eggs

and monkey sauce!

Probably a clever name mother's gave the dish so their kids would eat it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
