What cheese can I substitute for Gorgonzola?!
Gorgonzola cheese is so expensive at my local grocery store (like $8 for a little block), I was wondering if any other cheese has a similar flavor that I can substitute for it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
Roquefort less costly!?
Roquefort is now about $30 per lb!. and one of the most expensive
because of the duties applied to this cheese!.
also Roquefort is made from sheep's milk, Gorgonzola is cow!.
The least costly substitute is Danish Blue!.
Go with that one!.
It's the best substitute and also the "best buy" out of all the substitutes mentioned!.
Stilton, Maytag, Roquefort are all very expensive!.
Not needed for a sub!.
Danish Blue is easily available and the best bang for the buck!.

There are hundreds of varieties of blue cheese!. Roquefort is one of the less costly!.
I have also successfully substituted other cheeses with the understanding that the flavor will differ!. I have had great success with feta!. It is somewhat pungent (like blue) and has a similar texture when used in a sauce!.
The guy that suggested stilton is correct in regard to quality but the cost of stilton would be double or triple the cost of Gorgonzola (not exactly the solution you are looking for)
A mild goat cheese like montrachet will also work!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Any blue cheese will work!. There are several that should be cheaper, like most American Blue cheeses except maybe for Maytag Blue as that's supposed to be the King of American blue cheese!.
The English have Stilton though that's pretty expensive too, and sometimes Danish can be less expensive!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
