How Can I Stop My Eyes From Watering When Cutting Onions?!
I really like to cook but some of my favourite meals need 1-2 onions and whenever I cut them my eyes become really watery, it's alot worse than how most people I know get it and my nose runs alot too!. Is there anything I can do to stop my eyes from watering so much when I'm cooking and cutting onions!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
syn-propanethial-S-oxide is the vapour released when you chop onions!. It dissolves in the moisture on your eyes to form sulphuric acid, which is what irritates the eye!.
You can stop the vapour from dissolving in the water of your eye by dissolving it before it gets there, i!.e!. chopping the onions under water!. Other ways to minimise the amount of vapour released is to use a sharp knife (less cells in the onion are damaged and release the vapour-producing enzymes) or not to cut the root of the onion, where the concentration of vapour-producing enzymes is greatest!.
The only sure-fire way to prevent any of it getting in your eyes is to simply wear goggles (contact lenses won't work)!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Use this technique when cutting them - it keeps the cut faces, which is where the irritant spray comes from, as covered as possible!. It also gives you something to hold onto whilst chopping it
Peel it!. Cut off and discard the top end!. Cut it in half from top to bottom!. Place the halves cut face down!. Hold it by the bottom end!. Make one horizontal cut halfway across through it, but only as far as the bottom end you are holding!. Make parallel vertical cuts down through it, from one side to the other, but only as far as the bottom end you are holding!. Then make parallel vertical cuts across through it, from top to bottom, but only as far as the bottom end you are holding!. Discard the bottom end!. Repeat for the other half, if required!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I used to have to cut lots of onions for catering, and some things I did were to run them under cold water, leave water running and cut them nearby, stand back from the onions!. As I was putting the cut ones into a bowl, I kept the bowl on the other side of the table with a bit of plastic over it!. But for red onions, nothing helped me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I have cut up a lot of onions because I used to prep the salad bar!. I normally try to have a window open close to where I am chopping onions!. It allows me to get some fresh air!. Another thing I do is to keep my face as far away from onions as possible!. I have also found it easier if you find a vegetable chopper and use it instead of just using a knife!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
The "oils" from the onions tend to travel upwards!. Try not to lean over the onions while cutting them!. Back up a little!. That way the oils won't get directly into your eyes, and you should be ok!. The only other thing I can suggest is to wear some kind of eye protection (goggles)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Try a different type of onion!.Some onions make your eyes water more than others!.Or do what I did the other day, sit outside on your doorstep, with a chopping board on your lap and do it there! Ok, not ideal on a cold/wet day but it worked for me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Slice the onions under running water!.
It also helps to refridgerate the onions and cut them up while they are still cold, as it slows down the release of the enzymes that cause your eyes to water!.

I usually cut my onions inhalf and run cold water over them and the knife!. But for the most part, i refrigerate them so that they don't have as strong fumes when i take them out to cut!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

my grandma taught me:
before cutting them, put your knife under the tap, and then cut the onions without wiping it!.
AND cut your onions near a tap that's on! (with running water)(cold water)

The only way to keep your eyes from watering is to plug your nose, or cut the onions really fast!. Maybe get an onion chopper to do the work for you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
you can slice the ends off the onion and then rinse the two ends under the tap for 30 seconds each!. Hope this helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
If the onion hasn't been stored in the frig, just put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes before cutting!. That should really help!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Try putting them in the fridge for an hour before you use them, and ensure your knife is very sharp!.
