Question: Why do you need butter/oil in your sponge cake!? I just made one now w/o using butter/oil!.!.!?
!.!.and it came out perfect! I just used pastry flour, egg, and vanilla essence!. No oil and no butter! So I just wondered why they call for butter when making these!. Anyone know why!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

True sponges don't contain fat!. Victoria sponges do - they probably use less eggs, though!.

Sponges do not contain butter or oil- you usually pair them with butterry icing or whipped cream to make up for this whilst still maintaining the lighness of a sponge!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
