There is only one thing worse than a thin chef: a judgemental one!.

We all have to start somewhere, and ready-made pastry is one of the few things which is just as good as anything you can make yourself - and a lot less hassle!.

Try this !.!.!.

APPLE PIE

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS

Butter or margarine for greasing
375g pack of ready rolled shortcrust pastry
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
750g of apples
2 tablespoons of brown sugar
? a teaspoon of ground mixed spice or ground nutmeg
Milk for glazing

METHOD

Rub the inside of the pie dish with a little butter or margarine!.

Unroll the pastry!. Lay one end of the pastry over the dish and push it gently into place!. Leave enough for the lid!. Leave a margin of 2cm (1 inch) over the top of the dish!.

Put the lemon juice in a saucepan!.

Peel the apples!. Cut out the core and seeds and throw them away!. Cut the apples into 1cm (? inch) slices!. As you do them, put them into the saucepan and mix them with the lemon juice to stop them going brown!.

Add the spice and sugar!. Mix thoroughly!. Cook over a low heat for about 10 minutes, until the apples soften up a bit!.

Let it cool down a bit!.

Pour the apple mixture into the pastry case and level it out with a spoon!. Wipe around the edge with a little water!. Lay the remaining pastry on top and push the edges down to seal them!. Cut around the edge of the dish and remove the excess pastry!. Make some holes in an artistic pattern in the lid with a fork or sharp knife!. Brush or wipe the lid with a little milk, which will make it shiny!.

Cook in a preheated oven at 200°C, 400°F, gas mark 6 for 20 to 25 minutes!. The pastry will have gone golden!.

ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES

If it is all you have, you can use white sugar, instead of brown!. You can omit the spice, but it does make it taste nicer!.

Try different fillings, such as blackberry and apple!.

Serve with cream, custard, ice cream or even yoghurt!.

PS!. 2 tablespoons of brown sugar is about 6 of those restaurant sachets, but I didn't tell you this!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I LOVE THIS apple pie filling, I use this all the time hun:)

* Freshly ground nutmeg, to taste
* 7 medium apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
* 1 lemon, zested and juiced

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F!.

Mix together the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl!. In another bowl, sprinkle apples with the juice of 1 lemon and toss!. Stir in the sugar mixture to evenly coat the apples!.

Set aside!. Roll out chilled dough into 2 circles and use 1 round to line a 9-inch pie pan!. Chill the other round!.

Mound the apple and sugar mixture into the pie pan lined with dough!. Dot with the cubed butter!.

Using a pastry cutter, cut an even number of strips from the remaining rolled out dough!. Transfer every other strip to the pie top and weave in the lattice by folding every other strip back onto itself and laying another strip perpendicularly!. Fold the strips back across and repeat until completed!.

Bake pie for 45 minutes!. Let rest 20 minutes before slicing!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Filling:
1/2 cup to 1 cup all-purpose flour
6 to 7 cups apples cut into thin slices (recommended: Granny Smith)
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter

you can alter the filling however you like, you can't really screw up an apple pie filling, it's all about altering it and adding flavors to accomodate your palate!. The crust on the other hand is a royal pain so good idea on buying a pre-made one!. I use Pillsbury, they taste homeade!. Good Luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Peel and slice your apples (approx 6-8 apples)!.
Mix sugar (approx 3/4-1 cup), and cinnamon (to taste), and 3-4 tablespoons of corn starch or flour in with the apples!.
Bake on 325 degrees until the apples are soft when you pierce them with a fork and the crust is golden brown!. It will take about an hour to bake!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you can't make pastry and you don't know what goes in an apple pie (hint, it starts with A) you should just buy an apple pie!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Buy the canned filling!. After that, it's as easy as set it and forget it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
