I'm about to make my christmas cake?!

Question: I'm about to make my christmas cake!?
I've run out of baking powder, can I use bicarb instead!? The recipe only asks for 1/2 teaspoon, or shall I just leave it out!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Bicarb is one of the ingredients in baking powder- the other two are cream of tartar and a type of salt called citrate!.If you only use the bicarb you'll miss out on the other two!.It's not worth the wasted ingredients and time if it doesn't work!.Put it off for another evening or pop to the shops now!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't listen to people talking about "rising"!. Christmas cake isn't supposed to rise!. It's a fruit cake, it's supposed to be dense and heavy not light and fluffy like a normal cake!.

Look at it this way, it's half a teaspoon!. Do what you like or just leave it out!. Like I said, you don't want it to rise much anyway!.

Your cake won't rise without a leavening agent!.

If you have cream of tartar, mix it 40/60 with baking soda, and add it to your cake mix!. Baking powder has the correct balance of both, but this will work in a pinch!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, sorry, your cake needs baking powder to rise and bicarb won't do that!. You can't substitute for baking powder and you can't leave it out!. Better run out to the store and buy some more!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

bicarbonate of soda = baking soda, so yes, you can use it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

its up to you as long as you use self raising flour instead of plain then you will be fine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
