Best bread-crumb topping for casseroles?!

Question: Best bread-crumb topping for casseroles!?
I was wondering what you use to top your casseroles and things like mac and cheese!? The simple canned bread crumbs and Italian ones don't cut it for me as a topping!. I want something with a bit more texture!. Should I mix them with butter!? Use crushed crackers!? What do you think!? Thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
You can toast your crumbs in a dry skillet over medium heat but watch them closely because they will darken quickly!. Add seasonings like thyme, rosemary, garlic, salt & pepper to the skillet while the crumbs are still warm!.

If you're feeling wild and fancy free, you could also add 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet and crumbs - they will toast faster and be even more crunchy!. Add some shredded Parmesan or Romano to them for an Italian flavor, but be careful as the cheese will burn!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think crushed crackers work well!. Plain saltines or Ritz taste even better!. Try drizzling butter over the top of the crumbs or spray the top with butter-flavored oil spray, like Pam, before putting in the oven!.

Another good crumb topping I sometimes use are those french-fried onions that come in the can, such as French's!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

crushed cheese crackers are good
also, panko crumbs work well with most casseroles-- I melt a little butter in a bowl in the microwave and then stir the panko into it to coat the crumbs!. Sometimes I add a little Parmesan cheese or herbs/spices that compliment the other flavorsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Try Panko (Japanese bread crumbs)!. They are lighter and crunchier than regular bread crumbs!. Mix them with some butter, herbs and cheese, if desired!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I hate those fine breadcrumbs too!. Get a box of Stove Top, toss with 4-6 Tbsp!. melted butter and use that!. It's really amazing!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I pulverize tortilla chips!. Gives it that Southern flavor!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

try crushed up ritz with some melted butter!Www@FoodAQ@Com
