I just made a homemade crust and apple pie filling and some of the apples are still slightly crunchy!. Why would this happen!? I cooked it at 175 degrees celsius until the crust was golden brown!.

Why would the apples still be slightly hard!? They were Granny Smiths!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Four things soften apples

Mixing apples with sugar (the quantity of the sugar and the time the apples sat in the sugar)!. The sugar will breakdown the apples!.

The time spent in the oven

The type of apple and the thickness of your cut

possible addition of salt (some people use 1/4 tsp salt which also breaks down the apples

In my pies, the apples are soft!. I mix the sugar and apples about 15 minutes before I fill the pie!. I do not use salt!. I use golden delicious or macintosh apples!. I bake at 350 and I cut each quarter apple (medium size) into about 5 wedges!. I bake for about 45 minutesWww@FoodAQ@Com

You should cook an apple pie in a 350 F oven for about 50 minutes!. That way, the apples should be thoroughly cooked!. If your crust is browing too much, you can over the top with foil!. You can still put the pie back in the oven for a little while longer to finish cooking - just make sure you cover the crust with foil!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The sugar definitely breaks down the apples!. Next time u make the pie!. mix the apples in the sugar so they are evenly coated!. Granny smiths are the perfect apples for a pie!. If you notice the crust burning before the pie is dine, you can wrap the edges with aluminum foil until the pie is cooked!. Good luck and enjoy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Granny Smith apples don't cook down soft!. No matter how long you cook them, they stay a bit crunchy!. I never use them just for that exact reason!. I like for my apple pies to turn out almost like apple sauce in a crust!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sounds like someone took the pie out to soon or has the wrong kind of apples for cooking!. Has to be one way or the other!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
