When cooking with charcoal, can it rest on a solid surface or does it have to be on a grating?!
I've been using home-made charcoal and it falls through the grate in my smoker so I was thinking I would either remove the grate or wrap it in aluminum foil to keep the charcoal in place!. Any ideas!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

you need to use it on a grate to get enough air to effectively burn!. buy one of those grill woks with all the holes in it!. thats what i do when i get to the small stuff and it works fantastic!Www@FoodAQ@Com
It can rest on a solid surface as long as you have sufficient air flow so the charcoal can burn!. Most itty-bitty grills (tabletop models) have a completely solid surface!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
The grate under the charcoal allows air to flow freely!.
Perhaps you need a mesh screen to prevent falling through!.

It burns better when it has good air circulation!. Try a tighter screen underneath!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
