Answers:
It depends on the supermarket - Its typically either a whipped icing or a buttercream icing!. You can buy whipped icing in the baking isle now in stores - for good buttercream you can go online and find lots of recipies : ) Www@FoodAQ@Com
It's either whipped-cream frosting or buttercream, although I think buttercream is the 'norm'!.
Here's a recipe called "Grocery Store Frosting", so I'm assuming it would be right!
1 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract
2 pounds confectioners' sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons water
In a heavy duty mixer combine the shortening, butter or margarine, vanilla and water!. Add the sugar and salt, beat until well mixed!. Add a tablespoon or two more of water if needed!. Turn mixer to the highest speed and beat for 15 minutes!. Makes 2 cups!.
Good luck! Hope this works for you!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most supermarkets use buttercream frosting!. Some cakes will have cream cheese frosting (ex carrot cake) or chocolate ganache (a fudgy frosting)!. If the cakes have the smooth pretty icing it is fondant, which is like a sugary playdoh substace which allows for a lot of decoration options!. These fondant cakes usually have a layer of buttercream frosting under them b/c it tastes so much better :)Www@FoodAQ@Com
