Could someone explain these serving sizes to me...?!
I've been eating everything based on its serving size, but I've ran into a couple of tricky ones!. First of all, I had rice, and the package said it was 1/2 cup mix, but 1 cup prepared!. Is this because rice expands when it has finished cooking!? However, the complete opposite was said on the package of frozen corn I had!. It said serving size was 1 cup (frozen), but 1/2 cup cooked!.!.!. I don't understand the corn one at all, does corn SHRINK after it has cooked!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

The corn serving size has to do with the packing density!. As frozen kernels sit together, there is air between the kernels because they are hard, and cannot "nest" with each other!. When cooked, they become soft and can "get cozy" if you will and therefore get closer together!.
And yes the rice will expand upon cooking because the grains absorb water, which is not so true with corn!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The corn must lose it's shape and flatten after cooked but I agree that looks like a huge difference!. Actually, I am getting to prefer the foreign way of measuring ingredients - by weight!.
If you empty your large package of frozen corn into a dish, empty it all into a pot, cook it, strain it, return it to the same dish, the dish might look kind of empty-- compared to how full it looked when the corn in it was frozen!. All the air spaces will be packed with corn and some of the corn looses its shape!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
