I make mine the way you do and just like you want to try something different!. I saw Paula Deen do this a couple of night ago and I think I may do mine this way
Sweet Potato Balls

Ingredients

* 4 large sweet potatoes
* 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
* 2 tablespoons orange juice
* 1 teaspoon orange zest
* 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
* 2 cups shredded coconut, sweetened
* 1/2 cup granulated sugar
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1 large marshmallow per potato ball

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F!.

Bake the potatoes until tender, then peel and mash them!. Stir in the brown sugar, orange juice, zest and nutmeg!. In a separate bowl, toss the coconut with the sugar and cinnamon!. Press mashed potatoes around each marshmallow, creating a 2 to 3-inch diameter ball!. Roll the balls in the coconut mixture!. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes!. Watch carefully for the last few minutes of cooking; the expanding marshmallows can cause the potato balls to burst open!.

This is the way my mama always made them and we make the every year and every one loves them!.
15-117 yams
2 bags of mini marshmallows
16 oz can of crushed pineapple in syrup
half a bag of light brown sugar
and a stick of sweet butter

Take 10-12 yams wash them and then boil them
after they are boiled skin them and place them in a large mixing bowl
using a electric beater whip them periodically pull out the beater and remover the veins that will gather on your beater
add your butter, brown sugar and one bag of marshmallows and the strained can of pineapple!.
Place the mixture in a oven safe bowl ( my mama made a bowl in the 70's that we use every year just for the yams )
place them in the oven set at 350 degrees with the lid on for 40-50 minutes then remove the top stir the yams and cover the top of the yams with the second bag of marshmallows!. Place the yams back in the oven and cook until the marshmallows are nice and brown on top!.
