What do you add to your mashed potatoes?!
My boyfriend hates lumps in them so I just boil the potato pieces to death and add whole milk and butter!. Today I threw a tiny bit of powdered garlic and about an ounce of grated cheddar and let it melt!. He thought it was great!. Just curious, what do you do to your mashed potatoes to make them taste better!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Among many things I add to my mashed potatoes (not all at one time of course) are:
Sour Cream & chives
Buttermilk (surprisingly low in fat) with salt & pepper
Parsley, basil, thyme, etc!.
Parmesan or Asiago cheese
Roasted garlic cloves
Raw garlic steeped in milk or cream
A few tablespoons bbq sauce (I promise it's delicious)
Chicken stock and a splash of wine vinegar
Butter and finely chopped cauliflower or broccoli
Cheddar cheese and finely chopped roasted onions and garlic
Grill Seasoning and butter
Use your imagination- it's hard to go wrong with a potato!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

My husband absolutly loves it when I put roasted garlic in the potatoes and a little grated parmesan cheese!.
You can just wrap a whole head of garlic in foil and roast in the oven at 450 degrees for about 45-60 minutes, and then the cloves will just squeeze right out like butter, roasting actually gives the garlic gentle sweet flavor!.
I simply mash the roasted garlic in with a little butter, evaporated milk, parmesan cheese and a little salt and pepper to taste!. Turns out great every time!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your flavor additions and method seemed to have worked out for you, that's great, so here's some things I do to add in some of my own flavors that I prefer!. I like to boil my potatoes with Chicken Stock or throw in a teaspoon of chicken base or you could use a bouillon cube!. I also salt my water!. To remove all lumps, peel the potatoes (I like them both ways, it depends on what I'm having as a main dish) I add in some sour cream, half and half, white pepper, garlic, onion powder, unsalted butter, then put my immersion blender to work to make them super creamy!. Then, I fold in some Chives or scallions, Romano Cheese and Parsley!. If I want them more home style and rustic, I leave the skins on and hand mash (smash) them!. I also like to use leftover Baked potatoes (pierced with a fork, rubbed with Olive Oil and sea salt, then baked) for mashed potatoes and I definitely keep the skin on for these! Some potatoes, like the Yukon Golds cook faster and absorb my flavors better, come out creamier and have a heartier flavor, in my opinion!. Smaller Red Skin Potatoes also work better for me, as with the Baby Whites, those are my favorites!. So, I hope you continue to make interesting and creative Mashed Potatoes, you can never run out of ideas, so far, I haven't! Happy Thanksgiving to you, your boyfriend and both of your families!Www@FoodAQ@Com
Perfect, absolutely perfect!. You may not want to boil in pieces instead boil in equal 1/2's or 1/4's!. Reason - so you don't absorb to much water which can lead to mushy potatoes!. After potatoes are fork tender, drain and put back in the hot pot to absorb excess water!. Use a potato masher with melted butter and milk or half & half, very creamy!. Use the garlic powder for sure, and guoda cheese is great as well!. I do exactly what you did and use what ever cheese I have in the frig!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
First, don't boil the hell out of the potatoes!. That leads to glue!. Boil until firm, then, for incredibly smooth mashers, use a potato ricer!. You can probably get one at a kitchen store for about $10!.
My favorite mix ins are garlic and baby spinach!. Often I'll top that with corn, broccoli, cheese, sausage !.!.!. ummm!. I'm hungry now!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
